The flag of Indiana displays a dark blue field with a gold torch at the center, surrounded by nineteen stars, including a larger star above the torch and the word “INDIANA” in an arc.
Indiana’s state flag, officially designated a state banner, was adopted in 1917 during the state’s centennial era. The design was selected in a competition sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution and created by Paul Hadley. Its symbolism centers on a torch representing liberty and enlightenment, with rays for their far-reaching influence. The nineteen stars mark Indiana as the nineteenth state: thirteen stars represent the original states, five represent the states admitted before Indiana, and the larger star above the torch represents Indiana itself.
