History
This historic California state flag uses the state seal on a red field. California’s later and better-known state flag is the Bear Flag, whose origins trace to the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma. The Bear Flag design was formally adopted by the California legislature in 1911 and became the enduring state emblem.
