History
Illinois adopted its original state flag in 1915 from a design by Lucy Derwent. The current form adds the word “Illinois” below the seal, a change made official in 1970. The central device is the Great Seal of Illinois, redesigned in 1868, and includes the dates 1818 for statehood and 1868 for the seal’s redesign, along with the motto “State Sovereignty, National Union.”
