Historical flag of Idaho on a dark blue field with the state seal centered above a scroll reading “STATE OF IDAHO.”
Idaho adopted a state flag in 1907 on a blue field with the words “STATE OF IDAHO,” modeled on the battle flag of the First Idaho Infantry used in the Philippines in 1899. Later in 1907, Adjutant General C. A. Elmer added the state seal at the center and placed the state name on a red-and-gold band beneath it. The seal represents Idaho’s mining, agriculture, and forestry industries along with the state’s natural landscape. This version was formally codified by law in 1927, and the flag used the distinctive official proportion of 26:33.
