The national flag of Iceland features a red Nordic cross outlined in white on a blue field.
The modern design of Iceland’s flag was introduced in 1915 by Matthías Þórðarson. It was formally adopted in 1918 when Iceland gained sovereignty from Denmark and was confirmed by law after the republic was established in 1944. In keeping with Nordic cross traditions, the design has been associated with Christianity, while the blue, white, and red are also commonly linked to Iceland’s sea and sky, glaciers and snow, and volcanic fire.
