Finland’s national flag, commonly known as the Blue Cross Flag, was adopted in 1918 shortly after independence. Its design was created by Eero Snellman and Bruno Tuukkanen and follows the Nordic cross tradition shared by other Nordic countries. The white field has been associated with snow, while the blue cross has been linked to Finland’s lakes and sky. The national flag has the proportion 11:18.
Blue-cross flag adopted
Finland adopted the white flag with a blue cross as its national flag on 29 May.
Blue darkened; state emblem revised
The blue was darkened, and the state flag’s crowned arms were revised by removing the crown and adjusting the emblem’s position.
Flag proportions set by law
A new flag law defined the national flag’s proportions and superseded the 1918 flag law.
