The flag of Sweden consists of a golden-yellow Nordic cross on a blue field.
Sweden’s flag uses blue and yellow colors associated with the country’s historic coat of arms. Blue-and-yellow flag depictions are recorded from the 16th century, and a royal warrant of 1569 required a yellow cross on Swedish battle standards and banners. The Nordic cross reflects Sweden’s ties to the other Nordic countries and the Christian cross tradition. Reliable evidence of the flag on Swedish vessels appears in the 1620s under Gustav II Adolf. After the dissolution of the Sweden-Norway union in 1905, the present rectangular national flag was codified by law on 22 June 1906, while a triple-tailed version continued in military use.
