History
The flag was designed in 1969 by Roy Grønneberg and Bill Adams to mark the 500th anniversary of Shetland’s transfer from Norway to Scotland. Its blue and white colors echo Scotland’s national flag, while the Scandinavian-style cross reflects Shetland’s historic links with Scandinavia and its combined Scottish and Norse heritage. The design later received formal letters patent from the Lord Lyon in 2005.
