The flag of Norway features a red field with a blue Nordic cross outlined in white, with the cross shifted toward the hoist.
Norway’s current flag was designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer. It developed from earlier Norwegian use of the Danish red-and-white cross flag and added blue to create a distinct national design in the Nordic cross tradition. The red, white, and blue palette was associated with liberty, and the plain flag was legally adopted on 15 December 1899 after the removal of the earlier union mark used during the Swedish-Norwegian union. The official proportions are 8:11.
Earlier Norwegian flag adopted
Norway adopted the Danish flag with the royal flag in the canton; it served as a merchant flag until the new design was adopted.
Current cross design adopted
Fredrik Meltzer designed the red, white, and blue cross flag, which the Storting adopted and approved for civilian use in 1821.
Union mark added
A union mark combining Norwegian and Swedish colours was added to Norway’s national and state flags.
Union mark removed from civil flag
Parliament abolished the union mark on the national merchant and state flags; the plain flag was first flown in 1899.
Union mark removed from war flag
After the union ended, the union mark was removed from Norway’s war flag and ensign.
