The flag of Groningen shows a green Nordic-style cross outlined in white over four quarters, with red in the upper left and lower right and blue in the upper right and lower left.
The flag of Groningen was officially adopted on 17 February 1950 and was designed by Jan Tuin. Its design combines the red, white, and blue associated with the historic Ommelanden arms with the green and white of the city of Groningen. The central green cross symbolizes the city’s central location within the province and also recalls Nordic cross flags linked to Groningen’s historic trade relations.
