A blue flag with a centered golden Vergina Sun featuring sixteen rays.
This flag is used for the Greek region of Macedonia. It displays the Vergina Sun, a sixteen-rayed emblem unearthed in 1977 at the royal tombs at Vergina, ancient Aegae, and long associated with the Argead dynasty of Philip II and Alexander the Great. The design was adopted unofficially in the late 1970s as a regional emblem and is widely used by the administrative units of Central, Western, and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The blue is associated with the sky and sea, while the sun evokes the ancient Macedonian kingdom and Greek cultural continuity.
