The flag of Gibraltar is a white-over-red bicolor with a red three-towered castle centered in the white field and a gold key hanging below it into the red stripe.
The design is a direct rendering of Gibraltar’s coat of arms, granted by Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile on 10 July 1502. It was officially regularised as Gibraltar’s flag on 8 November 1982. Gibraltar is distinctive among British Overseas Territories in that its main flag does not incorporate the Union Jack. The castle represents Gibraltar as a fortified stronghold, and the golden key symbolizes its strategic position as the key to the Mediterranean.
