British Red Ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and Gibraltar’s badge in the fly, showing a red castle and gold key within a white shield above a yellow scroll.
The Civil Ensign of Gibraltar was adopted on 19 March 1996 by Royal Order in Council No. 281. It is a British Red Ensign in 1:2 proportion defaced with Gibraltar’s badge in the fly. The badge reflects Gibraltar’s coat of arms: the castle symbolizes the fortress on the Rock, and the key represents Gibraltar’s historic role as the gateway to the Mediterranean. It is used for civil shipping and replaced the earlier practice of flying an undefaced Red Ensign.
