Historical flag of Florida used from 1900 to 1985, showing a red saltire on a white field with the state seal in the center.
Florida adopted this flag on November 6, 1900, after voters ratified a constitutional amendment based on an 1899 legislative resolution. It replaced the 1868–1900 white flag with the state seal alone after Governor Francis P. Fleming argued that the plain white design could be mistaken for a flag of truce or surrender. The design used a red St. Andrew’s cross on a white field with the state seal centered, and this basic layout remained in use until the seal was standardized in 1985.
