The flag of Florida features a white field with a red diagonal saltire and the state seal centered at the intersection.
Florida adopted its current flag design after adding the red saltire in 1900 to the earlier white flag with the state seal. The saltire was introduced to keep the plain white design from being mistaken for a flag of surrender and is also associated with Florida’s Spanish heritage. The centered seal depicts a sunrise, a cocoa tree, a steamboat, and a Seminole woman scattering flowers, and the present seal design was adopted in 1985 after earlier revisions to the state flag beginning in 1845.
