The state flag of Costa Rica features five horizontal stripes of blue, white, red, white, and blue, with the central red band twice as wide and the national coat of arms set in a white oval near the hoist.
Costa Rica’s flag design was created on 29 September 1848 by Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno, who adapted the French tricolor by adding a dominant red stripe. The state flag version with the coat of arms was officially adopted for state use on 27 November 1906 and later modified in 1998. According to the cited sources, blue represents the sky and Costa Rica’s position between two oceans, white stands for peace, wisdom, and purity, and red symbolizes blood shed for freedom as well as national vitality.
