National flag of Nicaragua featuring a blue-white-blue horizontal triband with the national coat of arms centered in the white stripe.
The flag of Nicaragua derives from the blue-white-blue banner of the United Provinces of Central America. A version with the national coat of arms was first adopted on 4 September 1908, and the current design was officially codified on 27 August 1971. The blue bands represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and are also associated with loyalty and justice, while the white band stands for peace and purity. In the coat of arms, the equilateral triangle symbolizes equality, the five volcanoes represent the historic unity of the five member states of the former Central American federation, the rainbow signifies peace, the Phrygian cap stands for freedom, and the sun rays suggest a bright future.
