The flag of Costa Rica features five horizontal stripes of blue, white, red, white, and blue, with the central red band twice the width of the others.
The design was first created on 29 September 1848 at the suggestion of Pacífica Fernández Oreamuno, wife of President José María Castro Madriz, and was inspired by the French tricolour. The plain striped version is the civil flag. According to the cited sources, blue represents the sky, opportunities, and perseverance; white stands for peace, wisdom, and happiness; and red symbolizes the blood shed for freedom as well as the generosity and warmth of the Costa Rican people. The overall design was officially adopted on 27 November 1906, while the state and war flag adds the national coat of arms.
