The flag of Brittany, known as the Gwenn-ha-Du, features nine alternating black and white horizontal stripes with a white canton bearing eleven black ermine spots.
The Breton flag is called the Gwenn-ha-Du, meaning “white and black.” It was designed in 1923 by Morvan Marchal. Its layout was modeled on the United States flag, and its nine stripes represent Brittany’s historic dioceses: five black stripes for the traditionally Gallo-speaking eastern sees and four white stripes for the Breton-speaking western sees. The canton’s ermine spots refer to the arms of the Duchy of Brittany. Once associated with separatist movements, the flag received official recognition in 1997 and is now widely used as a symbol of Breton regional identity and heritage.
