The flag of Uruguay features nine horizontal white and blue stripes with a white canton bearing the golden Sun of May.
Uruguay’s national flag, officially called the National Pavilion, was designed by Joaquín Suárez. It was first adopted in 1828 with 19 alternating stripes and revised on 11 July 1830 to the present nine-stripe form for better visibility. The nine stripes commemorate the nine original departments of the republic. The blue-and-white colors were modeled after Argentina’s flag, and the Sun of May symbolizes the May Revolution of 1810, the Incan sun god Inti, and the hope of a new nation.
