Flag of Khakassia featuring a green hoist band with a yellow traditional sun emblem beside blue, white, and red horizontal stripes.
The flag of the Republic of Khakassia was officially approved on 25 September 2003 in a 1:2 proportion. It was designed by Gennady Afrikanovich Vyatkin and Sergey Andreevich Donskov. An earlier version was adopted on 6 June 1992 with the horizontal stripes ordered white, blue, red and with a black sun emblem; the emblem was changed to yellow on 23 December 1993. The current design retains the green hoist field with the traditional Khakas sun symbol while changing the tricolor order to blue, white, red. The colors symbolize the sky and rivers, purity and snow-capped mountains, courage and historical struggle, and the natural landscape, while the sun reflects an ancient solar motif in Khakas culture.
