The national flag of Barbados features a blue-gold-blue vertical triband with a black broken trident centered on the gold stripe.
Barbados adopted this flag on 30 November 1966 at independence. The design was created by art teacher Grantley W. Prescod after winning a nationwide contest with over a thousand entries. The blue bands symbolize the sea and sky, the gold band represents sandy beaches, and the broken black trident signifies the break from colonial rule; its three prongs are said to represent government of the people, by the people, and for the people.
