The flag of Guatemala is a vertical light blue-white-light blue triband with the national coat of arms centered in the white stripe.
Guatemala adopted this flag on 17 August 1871 with proportions of 5:8. Its blue-white-blue colors continue the historic palette associated with the former Central American federation. The blue bands symbolize the sky and Guatemala’s position between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and also represent justice and loyalty, while the white stripe represents peace, purity, and integrity. The centered coat of arms includes the resplendent quetzal as a symbol of liberty, a scroll bearing the date 15 September 1821, crossed Remington rifles expressing the defense of liberty, crossed swords for honor, and a bay-laurel wreath for victory. The design developed from earlier horizontal blue-white-blue flags and was reoriented vertically in 1871 under Miguel García Granados; it was formally codified in 1968 with a minor adjustment in 1997.
