#0054 · national
The flag of Ecuador is a horizontal yellow, blue, and red tricolor with a centered national coat of arms; the yellow band is twice the height of the other two bands.
The Ecuadorian tricolour was first adopted in 1860 under President Gabriel García Moreno and was later standardized in 1900. Its yellow, blue, and red colours trace back to Francisco de Miranda’s 1811 design for Gran Colombia. According to the cited sources, yellow symbolizes the fertility and rich soils of the land, blue represents the Pacific Ocean, clear skies, and coastal resources, and red denotes the blood shed in the struggle for independence. The centered coat of arms is used on the official and overseas flag.
Tricolor restored
On September 26, Ecuador restored the yellow-blue-red tricolor as its national flag.
Current proportions specified
Presidential guidance issued in November specified the flag’s 2:3 proportions and detailed its design.
