History
In 1861 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors commissioned a revised version of the original 1846 Bear Flag that added the California coat of arms to the field. California’s bear flag tradition drew on symbols associated with the 1846 revolt, and the broader bear flag design was later adopted as the official state flag in 1911.
