Flag of the Northern Mariana Islands: a dark blue field with a white five-pointed star over a gray latte stone, encircled by a multicolored floral wreath.
The dark blue field represents the Pacific Ocean and the Mariana Trench. The white star symbolizes the United States, the gray latte stone signifies the indigenous Chamorro people, and the floral wreath represents Carolinian heritage. The design originated in a 1972 school contest won by Vito Calvo. A version with only the star and latte stone was first adopted on July 4, 1976, the wreath was added in 1981, and the current version was officially adopted on July 1, 1985.
