History
This was the flag of the former Northeast Province of Sri Lanka. The province was created in 1983 by merging the Northern and Eastern provinces and was dissolved on 27 May 2007, when the two provinces were re-established separately. The flag’s red, white, and green stripes represented the Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim communities, while the centered golden sun symbolized unity, renewal, and a shared future.
