The national flag of Argentina features three horizontal bands of light blue, white, and light blue, with the golden Sun of May centered in the white stripe.
Argentina’s flag was designed by Manuel Belgrano and first raised on 27 February 1812. The Sun of May commemorates the May Revolution of 1810 and is associated with the sun symbol seen on early Argentine coinage. Official forms exist both with and without the sun, and the emblem’s design was later codified by decrees in 1943 and 1944, with further technical standardization in 2010.
Belgrano’s flag first raised
Manuel Belgrano created the blue-and-white flag, which was first raised at Rosario.
Blue-and-white flag adopted
The Congress of Tucumán formally recognized Belgrano’s flag as the national symbol.
Rosas-era flag modified
The Sun of May was shown in red, and four Phrygian caps were added in the corners.
Blue-and-gold design restored
Under Urquiza, the Confederation’s provinces returned to light-blue stripes and a golden Sun of May.
Current version adopted
Following national unification, the current national flag replaced the State of Buenos Aires flag.
Flag specifications standardized
Decree 1650/2010 specified the flag’s official measurements, fabric, colors, and accessories.
