History
The flag of the German-speaking Community of Belgium was adopted on 15 November 1990, when the community gained its own autonomous status. It is a banner of arms based on the community’s coat of arms. The red lion derives from the historic arms of the Duchy of Luxembourg and the Duchy of Limburg, symbolizing medieval heritage and cultural links to those territories.
