Umm al-Qaiwain’s flag derives from the red flags historically used by the Trucial States under the 1820 General Treaty, which introduced a white border. That border was later reduced to a vertical white stripe at the hoist. On 9 March 1961, a white star and crescent were added to distinguish the flag from those of neighboring emirates such as Ajman and Dubai. The red is associated with devotion to the Prophet Muhammad, while the white band and the star and crescent represent peace and the emirate’s Islamic identity.
