National flag of Turkey featuring a white crescent and five-pointed star on a red field.
The flag of Turkey uses a red field with a white crescent and five-pointed star, a design inherited from the late Ottoman period. A red Ottoman naval flag with a white crescent and star was introduced in 1793, and the five-pointed star was adopted in 1844. The Republic of Turkey retained this pattern after 1923, and its exact geometry and 2:3 proportions were standardized by Turkish Flag Law in 1936. The crescent and star are widely associated with Islam, though both symbols have much older origins in Near Eastern and Hellenistic iconography.
