The flag of Tuvalu is a light blue ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and nine yellow stars on the fly arranged to represent the country’s islands.
Tuvalu adopted this flag on 1 October 1978 at independence. Its light blue field represents the Pacific Ocean, the Union Jack reflects historic ties to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth membership, and the nine yellow stars represent the country’s nine islands arranged in a geographically based pattern. A different flag without the Union Jack was used from 1995 to 1997 before the present design was restored on 11 April 1997.
