The national flag of Australia shows the Union Jack in the canton on a dark blue field, with a large white Commonwealth Star below and five white stars of the Southern Cross on the fly.
Australia’s national flag was first chosen in a public design competition after federation and officially adopted in 1901. The Union Jack signifies Australia’s historic ties to Britain. The large Commonwealth Star represents the six states and, since 1908, the external territories. The five stars on the fly form the Southern Cross, identifying Australia’s location in the Southern Hemisphere. The original 1901 design used a six-pointed Commonwealth Star before a seventh point was added.
