Flag of Sardinia featuring a red Saint George’s cross on white with four black Moor’s heads, one in each quarter.
The flag of Sardinia uses the “Four Moors” emblem, a design of medieval origin associated with the Crown of Aragon. The motif is linked to the legend of Saint George’s intervention at the Battle of Alcoraz and later became the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Sardinia, also interpreted as representing the island’s four historic judicates. The flag was reinstated for the autonomous region in 1950, and a 1999 regional law standardized the heads as facing the hoist with the bandages placed on the forehead.
