History
Ulster is the traditional flag of the Irish province of Ulster. Its red cross on gold derives from the arms of the de Burgh family, medieval Earls of Ulster, while the white shield with the Red Hand is a long-standing emblem associated with Ulster and with legends of sovereignty linked to the O’Neill dynasty. The provincial flag’s date of adoption is unknown. In the 20th century, this design served as the basis for the Ulster Banner used for Northern Ireland from 1953 to 1973.
