Flag of Piedmont featuring a white cross on a red field, framed by a blue border and topped with a blue heraldic label.
The flag of Piedmont is based on the historic coat of arms of the Prince of Piedmont, created in 1424 when Amadeus VIII of Savoy granted the title to his eldest son and differentiated the Savoy arms with a heraldic label. Two main versions have existed, one with a blue border and one without. The current official version was adopted on 24 November 1995; it is bordered in gold and includes a gold fringe and an orange ribbon, though a plain version is also used. Earlier forms in the mid-19th century served as civil, merchant, state, and war ensigns of the Kingdom of Sardinia.
