Palestine’s tricolor with a watermelon slice at the hoist replacing the red triangle—keeping the black, white, green bands and evoking the flag’s colors via the fruit’s red flesh, black seeds, white pith, and green rind.
The Palestinian flag’s tricolor with a red hoist triangle traces to the Pan-Arab colors and was adopted by the PLO in 1964. After public display of the Palestinian flag was suppressed in the occupied territories following the 1967 war, Palestinians used the watermelon—whose red flesh, black seeds, white pith, and green rind mirror the flag’s colors—as a surrogate symbol. The motif gained renewed visibility in art and activism, notably popularized by artists such as Khaled Hourani from 2007 onward, and is now widely used in protests and digital solidarity materials.
