The flag of Libya is a horizontal red, black, and green triband with a double-width black central stripe bearing a white crescent and five-pointed star at the center.
Libya originally adopted this flag in 1951, and it was re-adopted in August 2011. The design was created by Omar Faiek Shennib for the Kingdom of Libya. Its three colors represent the historic regions of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan, while the white crescent and star on the black stripe reflect the Senussi banner and Libya’s Islamic heritage.
