National flag of the Maldives featuring a red field, a centered green rectangle, and a white crescent moon.
The present flag of the Maldives was standardized on 25 July 1965. Its red field symbolizes the courage and blood of those who defended the nation, the green panel represents peace, prosperity, life, and the palm-rich islands, and the white crescent denotes Islam. The design developed from an earlier plain red flag, later modified with a black-and-white diagonal hoist band, before the green panel and crescent were introduced between 1926 and 1932 under Prime Minister Abdul Majeed Didi. A brief 1953 version reversed the crescent's direction, and the hoist stripe was removed at independence in 1965.
