The flag of Mauritania shows a green field with thin red horizontal bands at the top and bottom, centered with a gold crescent and five-pointed star.
Mauritania adopted its original national flag in 1959 with a green field bearing a gold crescent and star. The green field and the crescent and star symbolize Islam, while the gold color represents the sands of the Sahara and the country’s mineral wealth. Two thin red bands were added at the top and bottom in 2017 to honor the blood shed in the struggle for independence and continuing sacrifice. The change was approved in a referendum and the new flag was first raised on 28 November 2017; the design was officially standardized in 2020.
