Flag of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, featuring a white field with four colored corner panels and a central emblem encircled by stars.
The flag of Huehuetenango was designed in 1955 by José Osberto Mackepeace Palacios when he was 15 years old. He presented the design on 2 July 1955 during the town’s patron-saint festival, and it later became the official flag of the department and its municipalities. Its colors are drawn from Maya tradition and the Popol Vuh, and the central depiction of Maya ruins refers to the region’s heritage. The ring of 32 stars represents Huehuetenango’s 32 municipalities.
