History

El Petén is Guatemala’s largest department and is strongly associated with tropical forest landscapes, Maya heritage, and regional wildlife. A departmental flag adopted in 1998 is described as using green and white with the department’s coat of arms centered, with the symbolism tied to rainforest wealth, peace, unity, and sustainable development. The emblematic imagery associated with El Petén includes references to Maya civilization and local fauna.
