History
The flag represents the Guatemalan department of Quetzaltenango. It uses a white field with the departmental coat of arms centered, and the emblem features a quetzal, a shield showing the region’s volcanic landscape, and a scroll bearing the name Quetzaltenango. The symbolism associates green with the fertile highlands, white with peace and unity, and red with courage and historic struggle. The design was formally adopted by departmental decree in the mid-1990s.
