Flag of Galicia with a white field, a blue diagonal band, and the regional coat of arms centered.
Galicia’s modern flag emerged in the late 19th century from the naval flag of A Coruña and was promoted publicly by 1898. Its blue diagonal cross was chosen as a distinctive design associated with St Andrew’s Cross, and the modern banner was later formalized by the Xunta de Galicia in 1984. The blue is associated with the Atlantic Ocean, while white is linked with peace and Galicia’s Celtic heritage. Earlier Galician symbols predate the modern flag: medieval heraldry recorded the arms of the King of Galicia as golden chalices on a blue field, establishing the chalice as a historic emblem of Galicia.
