Flag of Friesland with four blue and three white diagonal stripes, bearing seven red pompeblêden on the white bands.
The Frisian flag derives from medieval heraldic designs associated with Friesland, with related forms appearing in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its diagonal stripes recall the historic coat of arms of Friesland. The seven red pompeblêden symbolize the historic Frisian sea countries that united against Viking incursions, with the number seven expressing a traditional idea of plurality rather than a strict count. The leaves also reflect Friesland’s watery landscape. The design was standardized and officially adopted by the province on 9 July 1957.
