History
The flag of Friuli-Venezia Giulia was adopted on 17 October 2001. Its design shows a golden eagle on a blue field standing on white fortifications. The eagle derives from an antique vase preserved in Aquileia and refers to the ancient city of Aquileia, whose name is linked to the Latin word aquila, meaning eagle. The blue and gold colors echo the historic flag of the medieval Patria del Friuli, an independent patriarchal state that existed from 1077 to 1420 under the Patriarchate of Aquileia.
