The flag of the Canton of Lucerne is a square white-over-blue horizontal bicolor.
The flag of Lucerne has been in use since 1386 and is one of the historic cantonal flags of Switzerland. Its plain white-over-blue design is traditionally interpreted as representing snow-capped mountains above the region’s lakes, while the colors have also been associated with the Virgin Mary. The design has also been linked to the arms of the von Littau family. Although decorative variants with a central shield appeared over time, the plain horizontal bicolor remained the official standard.
