History

The flag of Belgorod Oblast was officially adopted in 1999. Its coat of arms features an eagle confronting a lion, a composition linked to the Russian victory in the Great Northern War, with the eagle representing the Russian army and the lion representing Sweden or the Swedish king. The colors are associated with traditional meanings including sky and loyalty for blue, purity and peace for white, and wealth, courage, and historic heritage for gold in the heraldic charge.
