The national flag of Azerbaijan is a horizontal tricolor of sky blue, red, and green with a white crescent and eight-pointed star centered on the red band.
The modern tricolor flag of Azerbaijan was first adopted by the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on 9 November 1918 and was designed by Ali bey Huseynzade. It remained in use until 1920, was revived by the Nakhichevan autonomous authorities in 1990, and was officially readopted for the independent Republic of Azerbaijan on 5 February 1991. According to the provided sources, the blue stripe represents Turkic heritage, the red stripe symbolizes progress, modernization, and the development of democracy, and the green stripe represents Islam. The white crescent is a traditional Islamic emblem, and the eight-pointed star is said to represent either the eight historic Turkic peoples or the eight letters of “Azerbaijan” in older Arabic script.
