A red secession-era Georgia flag bearing a large white state coat of arms with an arched “CONSTITUTION” and three pillars inscribed “WISDOM,” “JUSTICE,” and “MODERATION.”
In 1861 Georgia used several unofficial secessionist flags rather than a legally established state flag. This red variant belongs to that secession-era group of banners associated with Georgia’s withdrawal from the Union and support for the emerging Confederacy. Georgia did not adopt its first official state flag until 1879.
